Portrait of Dallon August, 2008. Dallon August was raised in the Hawkes Bay suburb of Flaxmere, and as a young artist honed his skills painting murals and tattooing. His formal art education began at the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), where he attended the Visual Art and Design Programme.
Currently, he lives in the Hokianga region of Northland where he is completing a Diploma in Visual Arts at Northland Polytechnic's campus in Rawene.

Dallon reports, "My journey is about reaching out to all of God's people. My paintings are a kind of language that speaks to people who wouldn't otherwise listen. Indeed, his thickly layered abstract landscapes invite the viewer to pause and consider the spiritual source of the world we inhabit. Objects such as earth and water, normally the building blocks of a landscape, are rendered as mere essences.
The colours are recognisable, but shapes are muted and seem to melt away. Instead, the foreground of these paintings contains swirling white and black lines that are like slipstreams created by the movements of an unseen Presence. These are visual clues, tell-tale signs of the spiritual forces that inhabit our Universe.

The body of work which Dallon is developing is wide-ranging. These are his first steps on a quest to reach out to each of us and draw us toward a deeper connection with our Creator. We are invited to briefly step out of our busy lives and take a moment to stop and listen.
